CHAPTER NINETEEN

I paced in my suite before the sitting room window that looked down at part of the royal gardens. A shooting star streaked across the sky below a full moon, as if hinting that my earlier wish for answers was about to come true. And maybe it was.

It was late morning and only forty minutes until midday mandatory training. For now, Kendrick was off doing his own thing after showing up earlier to give me his vein. I’d gone ahead with it, and felt like the worst person in the world during and after. I wanted my delusions to be real. Would give anything to get Ty back. But not at Kendrick’s expense.

And now I was running out of time.

I thought back to the brief call I’d made after Kendrick had taken off last night. From the card I kept in my jewelry box, I dialed the Boston number and it picked up after a few rings.

“Madam Rosalie. Fortune Teller Extraordinaire.”

“I need answers, and don’t even pretend you don’t know what this is about.” The extended pause evoked no dispute from the old woman, but I wasn’t taking that as proof. And I wasn’t accepting an explanation over the phone when she could lie. If she spun shit in person, I’d compel the truth from her. “I’ve organized a flight from Boston International. A driver will deliver you there, and another will bring you to me. Come willingly or under force. It’s your choice.”

There was a raspy clearing of a dry throat. “Then I guess I will see you late tonight, Amelia.”

“That’s tomorrow in my world,” I replied and hung up.

With all the questions after my delusional, or not-so-delusional dream with Ty—on top of what happened at the ball—I needed answers. Was I just losing my mind, or was Ty alive?

A light tap sounded at the main door. Finally. “Come in.”

The door swung inward and one guard came through the foyer to the sitting room. She stepped aside revealing a much smaller and frail woman. “Your guest, Lady Bathory.”

“Thank you.” The guard bowed and backed up to the door, closing it behind her. I caught the old woman’s wandering eyes. “I’m glad you came.”

Madam Rosalie scoffed. “Did I mistake the lack of choice in your summons?”

I took a seat on the cloth couch and she came forward, slip-ons pattering on the bare stone before hitting the rug. Wearing a velvet skirt and long-sleeved embroidered top, she lowered into a wingchair. “No. But you know why I needed you to come here.”

Even though it wasn’t a question, she nodded, her messy, gray bun bouncing on her head. “You cannot leave this place alone. A ruler among seven and of many, but you cannot follow your own lead.”

Sly old woman. But she wasn’t here just because I couldn’t leave easily; she was here to fess up. “Cut the crap and tell me the truth. You lied about Ty. You said he was gone. You said—”

“Tut, tut, tut.” She waved a bony finger in my direction.
